England vs USA: Why talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham will be at Wembley to give Wayne Rooney a fond farewell
Do you take enough time to smell the roses? I mean really get your nose in there, and inhale the soothing scent, the fresh fragrance of natural beauty of a flower. Try it with freesias and youll understand what I mean.Do you take time out to cherish, enjoy and indulge in the things in life that you love? I am a voracious reader. The education and enrichment from all kinds of books fill me with joy. Maybe music does it for you, or films, or walking. But whatever it is, do you spend enough time doing it?Life is too short, and we literally cant have everything we want thats a harsh reality. But we should immerse ourselves, when work and commitments allow in the things that bring us joy whenever possible. It cant all be work, work, work. It cant be all about being in places you dont want to be, speaking with people you dont want to speak with, eating things you dont want to eat, wasting your life doing things you dont want to do. Deep, eh?Its all leading up to me explaining why I will be taking time to go to Wembley for an England friendly against the USA this week.Adrian Durham will head to Wembley to watch England vs USA on Thursday night2

Ive always been an admirer of Wayne Rooney, in the face of the sometimes OTT and inexplicable negativity surrounding him, Ive stood firm in my support of Wayne. Hes Englands record goalscorer, hes Englands record outfield appearance maker, and I think a small part of Englands World Cup semi-final appearance is down to Wayne. Not because he set up a goal in Englands qualifying win over Scotland, but more because he was captain at a time of great turmoil. After the disaster against Iceland came the turbulence of Big Sam coming and going, before Gareth Southgate stumbled into the job.The work goes unnoticed, but Wayne, as captain, held the players together during that time, and then showed no bitterness in public after Gareth Southgate decided his England days were over. It was a small contribution to Englands road to Russia, but Wayne helped at a crucial time. No medals or plaudits required, but a tiny nod of acknowledgement.I was there at Stoke when Rooney smashed in a wonderful free kick to break the Manchester United scoring record. I was there at Wembley when Rooney broke the England scoring record and it clearly meant so very much to him both records did.Wayne Rooney made history by breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time England goalscoring record in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland in 20152

The biggest cheers at Wembley from the authentic England fanbase have always been for Wayne, as they were for David Beckham before him. Tournament-only fans probably dont realise this. It means that us authentic England fans really want to give Wayne a fond farewell.Sure Wayne had his bad moments, in 119 games they will happen of course. But England fans have been so starved of success, and endured so much pain, I love the idea of using the USA friendly to take a moment to respect a record holder, and celebrate his England career. Sure you could give Phil Foden 20 minutes in an England shirt if you wanted. Id rather he continued his work to truly earn that chance. There is a debate that should now take place about international caps for friendlies. But forget that for a moment, and SAVOUR the moment.Sometimes you have to take time out to just enjoy something. Sometimes you have to MAKE time to do that. Thats exactly what Ill be doing Thursday night. Thanks for the goals Wayne.Adrian Durham presents talkSPORT’s Drivetime show every weekday.
