Paul Pogba’s absence cost Manchester United dearly in Sunday’s Manchester derby, according to pop superstar and Red Devils fan Olly Murs.Pogba, the midfielder, was forced to sit out the Etihad clash with an injury, and he had to watch from the sidelines as City secured a convincing 3-1 defeat of their local rivals. The latest clash between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho ended in victory for the City boss2

David Silva and Sergio Aguero put the hosts in control before Anthony Martial converted a penalty to hand United hope they could rescue a point in the final half-hour. However, Ilkay Gundogan netted City’s third in the final minutes after a brilliant team move to put the result beyond all doubt. The result returned City to the top of the Premier League table and opened up a 12-point gap between Pep Guardiola’s side and Jose Mourinho’s United.City were considered favourites for the match prior to kick-off, and losing Pogba – widely regarded as United’s best outfield player – increased their chances of victory even further.Pogba was forced to miss the derby through injury2

And, after the result proved United’s pre-match worries were correct, Olly Murs feels Pogba was a huge loss for the Red Devils.Pop superstar Murs is a famous Man United fan, and he joined talkSPORT to discuss his disappointment with Sunday’s result. He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “When you look at the team yesterday, I mean our starting XI against City’s…“We missed Pogba big time, and people won’t be mentioning that today. “I think we definitely missed that bit of quality in midfield yesterday; people forget we went there last season and were 2-0 down at half-time but managed to claw it back to 3-2 and Pogba was a massive part of that.“When I looked at the midfield yesterday we had [Nemanja] Matic, [Marouane] Fellaini and [Ander] Herrera.“When you compare that to the midfield they had…“We missed Paul yesterday massively, it was a big loss for us.“In the big games against the big teams you need to have your biggest players.”While Murs – who watched the match while rehearsing for his performance on Sunday’s X Factor – had few words of praise of United’s midfield, he could not stop himself raving about one of City’s stars in the centre of the park.He continued: “Fernandinho… Jesus, that guy! He is phenomenal.“It pains me to say it, but he was everywhere yesterday. He is a massive part of that team and was massive yesterday.”
