Speaking in ITV4s Out of Their Skin documentary, Wright said: When I first signed for Palace I got abuse in the changing room. It was just an accepted thing to do that.Steve Coppell had started to assemble a team that were young, vibrant, athletic and there was a lot of tension with the older players at the time.In training we played blacks against whites, people are flying in, flare-ups. A lot of the time the black guys won, you know. Some of the times there was friction.Black players had a submissive way about them, in a predominantly white environment. Somewhere along the line youre going to be the butt of jokes. If youre not somebody who is going to laugh and joke about with it, then youre seen as Oh watch him, hes got a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.Ian Wright (left) with former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand3

Despite battling against racial abuse at away grounds, Wright was prolific in his six-year spell with Palace and earned a then club-record 2.5million move to Arsenal in 1991.It was four years later when Cantona, playing for Manchester United, famously kung-fu kicked a Crystal Palace fan after being sent off at Selhurst Park.Cantona received a nine-month football ban along with a 20,000 fine from the FA.Former England striker Wright, 55, added: Every black player had ten times more reasons to kung-fu kick a fan. People say how I felt that night when I watched it. If Im being totally honest I felt jealous jealous.Cantona was allegedly told to f*** off back to France. The guy denied it and was never convicted of a racist charge.People like Cyrille Regis and Brendon Batson – as wrong as it was what Cantona did – they had ten times more reasons to kick a fan.4. You couldnt as a black man try to bring up racial issues and be taken seriously.Youve got a race card burning a hole in your pocket. Youve got chips on your shoulder – you couldnt do it.It took a Frenchman to bring home the issues of racism – a white Frenchman.Wrights two-part documentary Out Of Their Skin airs on ITV4 at 10pm on Tuesday, November 27 and Wednesday, November 28.

As Eamon Dunphy, journalist and ex-Manchester United youth player, puts it: 'Joe was a delightful man with a shrewd mind and an instinctive grasp of the human condition. Women liked him.
